May is cumming…

NationalMasturbationMonth2

And so can you!  May is National Masturbation Month.  Self-pleasure is something that is often shamed as unsafe or immoral, particularly for women.  Female masturbation is often silenced, and women who masturbate commonly experience guilt because of the way we have been taught to fear it.  In reality, it is a healthy and common activity for all genders.

Masturbation is a low-risk act that carries many benefits.  It has positive health impacts, including but not limited to headache relief, sleep aid, reduced stress, and reduced menstrual cramps. For many women who struggle to experience orgasm during partner intercourse, it can be a great means of learning how they like to be stimulated.  In fact, most women experience their first orgasm through masturbation.  It enhances partner sex both emotionally and physically.  Some people abstain from sex with partners, and masturbation serves as a way of experiencing sexual pleasure on one’s own.  Of course, not everyone desires to or does experience sexuality, and that is great, too.

We should all be conscious of the ways in which we are being told to separate ourselves from what our bodies need and want and be willing to challenge and question these negative messages.  I encourage anyone with curiosity or frustrations to explore their bodies this month–and every month.
